RAG Explained: How AI Answers Questions About YOUR Data

Ask a chatbot about your company's refund policy and it will guess — confidently and often wrongly. RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) fixes this by letting the AI look things up before answering.

The recipe has three steps. First, your documents are split into chunks and converted into embeddings — numerical fingerprints of meaning — stored in a vector database. Second, when a question arrives, the system finds the chunks most similar in meaning to the question. Third, those chunks are pasted into the AI's prompt as context, so the answer is grounded in your actual content, often with citations.

RAG powers most 'chat with your docs' products, support bots, and enterprise assistants in 2026. Tools like NotebookLM give you RAG with zero engineering: upload sources, ask questions, get cited answers.
