Perplexity vs Google: Is AI Search Actually Better in 2026?

AI answer engines promised to kill the ten blue links. After a month of using Perplexity exclusively, the reality is more interesting: they are better for some searches and clearly worse for others.
Perplexity wins on research questions — comparisons, explanations, 'what is the current state of X' — where its synthesized, cited answers save fifteen minutes of tab triage. Google still wins on navigation, local results, shopping, fresh news depth, and any query where you need the primary source itself rather than a summary of it.
The habit that stuck: question-shaped queries go to Perplexity, destination-shaped queries go to Google. And for anything important, click Perplexity's citations — AI synthesis is a starting point, not a final authority.
